LIZ SPIKOL
Thanks for coming to visit. Liz is an editor, writer, blogger and bon vivant. Well, maybe not a bon vivant, but that certainly sounds better than "a person who likes to lie on the couch." Liz writes a column for Philadelphia Weekly called "The Trouble With Spikol," which started a s an account of what it's like to live with a mental illness, but evolved into a space for mostly humorous musings on everything from the death penalty (always funny) to not being able to use a mop. She also writes for the paper about music, graphic novels and pet supplies. Check out her blog for more.
She has personally supported me, and Sherman Arts for years...

NEW PARADISE LABARATORIES
new paradise.jpg
New Paradise Laboratories (NPL) was founded to create surprising, meticulous, spiritually challenging, and wholly distinctive experimental theatre productions that investigate physical expression, on-stage and in life. These productions are assembled using collaborative creative processes developed by the company. The work tends to value wild humor, shock, a concern for history, a muscular visual sensibility, and a fascination with the utopian impulse. Furthermore, NPL uses the fruits of its experimentation to benefit the artistic and audience community as a whole.

BRAT PRODUCTIONS
brat.jpg
WHY WE EXIST--- Founded in 1996, Brat's mission is to create a new, younger generation of theatre goers by creating theater that breaks the rules; theatre that tests conventions; theatre that rocks. HOW IT ALL STARTED--- In an effort to make theatre going less intimidating, Madi Distefano directed A Midsummer Night's Dream in a brick and ivy covered courtyard in Queen Village. The unique atmosphere was made even more accessible with a BYOB policy and a $5 ticket price. Since then Brat has continued working on both contemporary material and re-envisioned classics, working with new artists, working in non-traditional venues and working to keep our ticket prices low.

SOUND RESOURCES

MATT RICCHINI
m_d6a8f5d4da1995695298a6dfaecce79c.jpg
I like to record and mix rock bands, especially weird ones. Acoustic theory and microphones fill me with geeky joy. I live in a large old Victorian house with several other musicians, so when you hire me you get to use all our stuff, some of which is listed below under what I "sound like." In the past, I have worked with Pepi Ginsberg (co-producer, engineer, performer), Charlemagne, (co-producer, performer), Lemons are Louder than Rocks (mixing), Mt. Fuji (tracking), King of Prussia (tracking, mixing), and Soft People (producer, engineer, performer). Some samples of that work can be found a little lower down....
My work style is very flexible, though I do prefer to get things sounding the way a client wants before we even get to mixing. (That's where all our guitars, amps, and pedals come in handy!) This requires my familiarity with the behavior of each drum, guitar, amp, pedal, room, and mic used during a session. I worry about that stuff and anticipate how things will blend so you don't have to and can just perform.
Recently, I recorded a series of live harp concerts, and edited audio for a full length documentary of photographer Zoe Strauss.
I am also available for theater sound engineering, operation, or design, having spent four seasons as the house sound tech for the Wilma Theater, and working for BRAT Productions (EYE-95 Re-Tarred), Shakespeare in Clark Park, and Pig Iron theater company.
I even teach drum lessons! That's me playing on the two Soft People songs, SugarMama and Debauched in the Aughts. I have two kits here, so we can play alongside each other as we go.
Sound Engineering (record, mix, post production)- $25/hr
Drum Performance - $20/hr
Performing and Engineering - additional $20/hr thru tracking
Drum lessons - $25/hr

I'm a coffee shop in West Philly. I have wifi. Black Death is a chocolate kick-in-the-pants, or a metal band from Ohio.
This is Wendy and Alexi's new coffeshop AKA The Comet. We serve Fair Trade certified organic coffee that's roasted locally. We have loads of teas, if that's your thing, our supplier is a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership. We have herbal infusions, all organic or "wildharvested", drinks to ease your cold or soothe you to sleep. There's stuff to eat, too, but you'll see what's to eat that day when you come in. No meaty food here, though. lots of spinach. and cheese, if you like that kind of thing.

ARS NOVA WORKSHOP
589868195_m.gif
Ars Nova Workshop: An Introduction
Founded in 2000, Ars Nova Workshop (ANW) is a Philadelphia non-profit jazz and experimental music presenting organization. ANW intentionally programs events and concerts in alternative spaces, showcasing divergent and challenging musical traditions and perspectives. ANW acts as an intermediary between musicians and composers and their audiences, while working to inform, inspire, and challenge listeners while elevating the role of jazz and experimental music in contemporary culture.
Fervently upholding the jazz/Free Jazz continuums by supporting its musicians, other 20th century composers and improvisers as well as the work of emerging artists, ANW events are a forum for discourse and new trends in contemporary music theories and practices. ANW believes in the transformative power of challenging art and seeks to be a vital cultural resource for Philadelphia (and beyond) by providing the most engaging and appropriate environment for musicians and composers.

EVIL TWIN BOOKING
ETBsplash.gif
http://www.eviltwinbooking.org/
Evil Twin Booking Agency is a worker owned collective that helps to bring socially conscious independent films and performance artists to both small towns and large cities. We believe that art and information are for the people, and not only for the privileged. Folks get in touch with us when they want to bring any of the presentations on our roster to their town, and we help them figure out how to host the event.
Normally the task of exhibition is a difficult one for the independent mediamaker: Smaller distributors and self-distributed projects are often forced to compete against well funded studios for the limited amount of space and time in metropolitan art-house theatres. At Evil Twin Booking we're trying to remedy this problem as many of the projects we deal with are politically oriented and cutting edge and need a little more push. (We consider ourselves subcaninophiles: we root for the underdog.)

The Wooden Shoe is also a drop-off point for Books Through Bars, a Philadelphia based program to get books to prisoners. If you are interested in it, you can go to http://www.booksthroughbars.org/ I sell many records and cds, too, from punk to hip-hop.

This is not a band. This is a sacrament to life and consciousness at the end of the world. This is not an option. This is a project for lifers, for those who the margins of culture are not a choice. This is for those who can't function but won't lie down and die. This is for people whose only rest comes from death, for those who proceed regardless. This is the left-hand path as applied to DIY. There is a lot of work to be done involving a mix of long term construction and surgical destruction.

FLEISHER ART MEMORIAL
fliescher.jpg
The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial is the nation's oldest tuition-free art school — located in the heart of South Philadelphia.
Fleisher is guided by the spirit of its founder, who first extended an invitation in 1898 for 'the world to come and learn art.' More than a century later, Samuel Fleisher's singular vision of high-quality, tuition-free art instruction continues uninterrupted at the Memorial.
At Fleisher, artists of all backgrounds share in the commonality of the creative experience while studying with a distinguished faculty of working artists in fine arts mediums as diverse as painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and ceramics.
Throughout its history, Fleisher programs have impacted more than 500,000 individuals, whether through its in-house art classes for adults and children, or, more recently, via in-class and after school programs in area schools. Last year, over 4,000 students attended programs that offered more than 80 choices for visual arts study weekly. Additionally, the exhibition and performance programs over the past thirty years have featured and promoted the work of innumerable local, regional, national and internationally known artists.

PAUL GREEN SCHOOL OF ROCK
green.jpg
Whats this Rock School thing all about? The Paul Green School of Rock Music is the nations premier performance-based rock music program. We accept students from ages 7-18 and turn them into genuine rock stars. How does the program work? Students receive 45 minute private lessons on the instrument of the their choice. Students also participate in weekly 3 hour supervised rehearsals to prepare them for the main event, THE SHOW! Past shows have included tributes to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Metallica, The Who, Iron Maiden, Zappa and the Beatles. We find that the combination of private lessons and group band practice with their peers is the best way to motivate kids to practice hard, overcome stage fright, and become amazing musicians. Is it too late to join for this seasons shows? We operate with an open, rolling admissions process for all 3 seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall) throughout the year. How do I join? CALL US NOW !!!!!

Whimsical, inventive, and profound, these tales set in the City of Brotherly Love paint insightful portraits of contemporary life. PSYDDE DELICIOUS (Artist/ Corset Maker/ Party
nextry_02.jpg
In the words of Philadelphia Style magazine, "...Psydde Delicious is a mess." The designer, promoter, party monger, and all around dirty boy is the creator and host of the now infamous Fast Cheap and Out of Control party. Delicious, when not encouraging amateurs to take it off for the "Cheap Slut Go-Go Contest," can often be found lacing people into beautiful but binding corset creations as part of his job description in Delicious Corsets , with partner Amy Schmitz. Psydde is also the monstrosity responsible for ROCK N ROLL QUEER BAR: An irreverent circus for the homopunk, queer-rocker set. He is responsible for the Pornaoke (He provide the scenes, YOU provide the screams!) But his most devastating contribution to the decline of western civilization may be Titty Slap, An all girl trampoline topless slap fight. Psydde feels it is his responsibility and goal to destroy the inhibitions of uptight, repressed, and narrow-minded individuals everywhere!

Lauren Parker and Carolynne McNeel are the lovely ladies of Mew Gallery. They both went to Drexel University for Fashion Design 3 years apart from each other, but didn't really get to know each other and become friends until they worked a series of jobs together (Mimi Maternity-design team, And 1-tech team, Fleisher-teaching children's workshops.)
Through all these changes, the one thing that remained consistent was their great collaboration and teamwork, so they decided this whole office job thing is for the birds and decided to work together for themselves!!
The idea of Mew Gallery sprouted from a collaborative bond they formed in June of '05 at a small scale for partaking in craft fairs, each bringing their strengths from their individual projects (Aviaire-CM, and Casita Nido-LP) to create their Portauovo brand.

BLACK FLOOR GALLERY
Some say art is sacred. not all art, but ours. It has been sought after by generations of scholars and the simple-minded alike. Everyone searches for the golden key to unlock its vast vaults; staining the world with wit and beauty. The gods are waiting for someone to discover it and now there is a chance, a very accessible chance to enter this desirable realm of the unknown, this seductive and torturous void and get a peek of salivation. Perhaps you might get distracted along the way....

SPACE 1026
9[1].jpg
What is Space 1026?
It‘s a tough question, but here are three answers:
Space 1026 has been a 7 year experiment. It has developed from a handful of founders to dozens of co-conspirators. Together we are becoming Space 1026.
Space 1026 is a common excitement for making, producing and creating, not for some outside world of aficionados, but for each other, for our own kind.
Space 1026 is two floors of a building at 11th and Arch. That‘s in Philadelphia. It is a network of dozens of artists who‘ve had studios at the Space, past and present. It is dozens of artists who‘ve had shows at the Space over the last 7 years. It is dozens of artists who come to our events, and participate in our community.
Space 1026 is a community - a creative community - not an institution.
Or you could try and pull some postmodern shit and say Space 1026 does not exist; but then you‘d have to do some explaining to the mice that eat our leftovers every night.

HAUNTED CREAM EGG
the haunted cream egg is a venue designed to produce and promote art in a variety of media. we host music shows, gallery presentations, performance art, film screenings, dinner parties, salon discussions, music sessions, and whatever else is bubbling in our brains. the idea for the haunted cream egg arose out of a need for a local collective of wonkiness and artistic exploration. we believe in all things haunted and psychedelic. we like our people strange and our music even stranger. we want a coast-to-coast movement. open up your brain, here we come.
we would like to extend our performance type, however, to include more than just music shows. dancers, playwrites, actors, puppeteers, performance artists, filmmakers, photographers, painters, drawers, animators, craftspeople, writers, poets, and anyone else with an inkling for creativity: we would like to be a venue for your work. contact us.
the haunted cream egg ascension works in close conjunction with other DIY venues/production companies in the philadelphia area such as: THE BIG PINK, THE AVANT GENTLEMEN'S LODGE, DANGER! DANGER!, BOWERBIRD, CLAP IT OFF, 409, CEDAR HALL, BADMASTER RECORDS, and many more. additionally, the haunted cream egg would not exist without the incredible contributions and creative energies of countless individual friends from around philadelphia.

FESTIVALS
***********
TERROR FILM FESTIVAL
terror film.jpg
Terror Film Festival is in its first year and we’re eager to go. To better support filmmakers and fans in a more positive way, Terror Film Festival is now bringing to our filmmakers and fans a cooler, more intimate film festival.
Don’t worry, we’re still down with supporting the filmmaking and the movies of the horror, fantasy, sci-fi and thriller genres. That never changes. But now we’re also focusing more on the quality and integrity of the festival by making it a more personal and enjoyable experience for the fans and filmmakers.
One way that Terror Film Festival is doing this is by choosing one select venue throughout the festival to screen your films. This allows us to focus more on the presentation of the films. And we’ve eliminated the conglomerated ideals and have placed our focus squarely on where it belongs. Screening the films so they’re enjoyed by the audiences. And we still offer a shot at cash prizes, awards, and that sweet, sweet distributor look.
Another way Terror Film Festival is focusing more on the films is by having our after parties at wonderful local watering holes close to the venue. We’re selecting primo establishments that will enhance the whole feeling of being a part of this festival. And by refocusing our efforts less on the parties, we can spend much more time on making sure that your film screening absolutely rocks!

The Festival is a showcase for performers that are as smartly engaging as a book and authors that are as fun to watch as a band. For more information: 215festival.com

*DUMPSTA PLAYERS

http://www.dumpstaplayers.org/
The Dumpsta Players are a monthly themed interactive improvisational theatre experience that parodies society's joys and ills in an irreverent and over-the-top style. Dumpsta was chosen as a name because the company recycles costumes, actors, characters, and comic bits month after month. Dumpsta also brings to mind the trashy nature of our performing -- drag queens, genderfuck, and all walks of life come together and express joy, rage and general chaos through live mic and lipsynched sketches once a month!

GATE
gate.jpg
formerly Gate to Moonbase Alpha, stands as one of the oldest continually-running events for electronic and experimental music in the city of Philadelphia, and is unique in that all events are completely free to the public. Since the late-1990s, the series has hosted performers from as far away as Europe and Australia, to as close as a block from The Rotunda, where the shows are held. Past performers have used everything from electronic synthesizers, guitars, and laptop computers to scrap metal, tree branches, and children's toys.
