AVARUS (Finland)

4070765501.jpeg

Avarus was formed in Tampere (Finland) year 2001 by a bunch of people from Tampere. Most of us were members of bands The Anaksimandros and Pylon. After that our group has gotten larger and looser, but the spirit is still the same. People have come from other groups like Kiila, Munuaissymposium 1960 and Kemialliset Ystävät. The borders between the bands are sometimes quite loose. There are about 10 core members in Avarus in three different cities, and the number of occasional members is 10-20. But it's not at all important to know who's playing and when. It's about a collective sound, a play or a game.

Avarus's sound is primitive, child-like, joyous and free. We play long improvisations, from which we choose the most listenable parts for the records. Live shows also contain the searching-for-the-sweet parts. Music changes a lot, because it's not about trying to sound like something, but just playing how we feel like playing and it changes all the time. That's why one day we may sound like a duck sucking an empty playmobile pack when another day we are closer to angels accidentally re-inventing sport rock.

The playing for us is about giving yourself completely to the stream of sound. It's improvised, like a conversation, but there are billions of different conversations and billions of ways to be a part of one. It's not forbidden to yell or fart when others are talking about falcons.

THE NEW MOTELS

Rock / Powerpop / Folk Rock

l_66934069e9054e7ac43a8c27bd77fbc4.jpg

"Jenkintown’s New Motels write songs with such attention to detail that the lyric sheet becomes something to treasure. Luckily, there’s one included in their Domestic Life EP, just released by Scranton’s Prison Jazz label. Postcollege anxieties arise in “West Coast Brawl,” and likewise the exquisite drag of suffering through your 20s is captured by the title track and the Big Star-ish “Modern Thinker.” Leader Josh Levandoski sings calmly over the band’s twangy pop, which remains sunny despite his looming worries. It’s mostly a slow-burning record until the closing “Drama of the Hollywood Scene” stirs up vivid imagery that could’ve been inspired by Annie Hall. That’s a big complement, by the way." BEE TEAM

Indie

Chrissy likes girls. Josh likes girls too. This being one of their major influences, they are in a band together that plays music that is fun and honest. The band is called The Bee Team. The band blends good times, rock N roll, banjos, and cute guy/girl tradeoffs into one giant bowl of tasty awesomeness. The band writes songs to make you sing along and have a good time.

ALANA AMRAM AND THE ROUGH GEMS

Country / Americana / Visual

The Rough Gems photographed by Bram Muller.

TIMEOUT NY SAYS: Local songwriter Alana Amram—daughter of Beat music icon David Amram—plays graceful, intelligent country-pop. She’s got a clear, arresting voice and a gift for quirky romantic imagery.
Blackest Crow" is the first track on this EP, and it showcases Amram's work as something that can fit in well with the work of Alison Krauss or even the re-imagined folk genre of the current period (which has adherents including Akron/Family and Devendra Banhart). There seems to be a slight bit more rock influence during "Blackest Crow", but individuals could easily hear this style of music in 1967 as they can in 2007 (or 2008, for that matter). The meandering style present during "Painted Lady" continues with the same general style of "Blackest Crow", ensuring that Amram does not lose anything in the way of listeners. The emotion present in the vocals is interesting, because it is presented to listeners by a fairly deadpan style of delivery.

The slight differences in intonation are what provides this difference, and why tracks like "Painted Lady" are so special. Instead of going to the limits, the slight modifications made to the general sound of the EP yield tremendous differences. "Miss You While You're Away" is the shortest track on the disc, and it marks a different type of style for Amram. Where the previous tracks went more towards the folk genre, "While You're Away" is a track that is firmly rooted in the country and western genre. The vocals are what link this track to the previous two efforts, and create a fuller sound for Amram that was present during the ending of "Painted Lady". "Take A Drink" keeps with the C&W sound, but throws a little bit more of a curveball into the track – this ploy ensures that Amram will have a large fanbase by the time that eir LP comes out. If you miss the style of a Ronstadt or a Parton, give Amram's EP a few good listeners – I think you'll like it.

ADERBAT

"Aderbat's newest CD, We Belong to the Sea, is still as richly ethereal and slowly pulsating as anything they've done in the past. But there's a nervously rock-ish jitter to the cello- and horn-filled proceedings — as if someone woke the ghost of Nick Drake and let him run wild. Smartly romantic stuff."
A.D. Amorosi, City Paper

"...a reverb-y strain of Americana that's at once world-weary and fresh-faced. Between Taylor’s scratchy-soft vocals and the band's warm experimentation, it's easy to be reminded of both Josh Rouse and John Vanderslice."

SUGAR TOWN presents

THE SHONDES (NYC)
http://www.shondes.com/
Although their name is taken from the Yiddish word for "shame" or
"disgrace," the Shondes are far from quiet about their political
beliefs. On the contrary, this Brooklyn quartet blends elements of
queercore, political punk and Jewish folk music into a melodious
rock-affirmation that anyone would be proud to dance to.
Sleater-Kinney comparisons are not out of order, as the band
alternates between call-and-response harmonies and punchy guitar
riffs, often accented by Elijah Oberman's plaintive violin. Coupled
with grunge-inflected vocals by Oberman, Louisa Rachel Solomon (bass)
and Temim Fruchter (drums), their songs move with ease between
heart-wrenching laments and upbeat rock anthems. The Shondes are
currently celebrating the release of their debut album, The Red Sea,
but they've already been around the block, touring with indie
favorites Electrelane, Erase Errata, Joe Lally (Fugazi) and Lesbians
on Ecstasy, plus many more. They may not give up their activist day
jobs anytime soon, but it won't be for lack of popularity. (Mary
Wilson, CP)

LIBERTY CITY KINGS

Liberty City Kings, aka LiCK, is Philly's drag king and burlesque

THE FEMME SHOW (Boston)
http://www.thefemmeshow.com
The Femme Show premiered to sold out crowds in Jamaica Plain, MA in
October 2007. The Femme Show is a revue of smart, sexy, interactive
performance about queer femme identity that features film, dance,
literary readings, burlesque, drag, and performance art from award
winning artists. Bay Windows writes, "What do a modern dance with Doc
Marten boots, a stop motion film with Barbie dolls and a burlesque
belly dance have in common? They're part of the sexy fun of The Femme
Show, a multidisciplinary cabaret that explores queer femme identity.
The show features 15 artists with backgrounds in everything from
modern dance to cartooning to conceptual art."

heat direct from the street. With influences as diverse as Rakim,
Bikini Kill, Salt-n-Pepa, Sleater-Kinney, Biggie, Lil' Kim, Missy
Elliott, and Bratmobile - Sgt. Sass have found the freshest blend of
the identity - politic confrontationalism of riot grrl punk and the
playful, yet truthful, braggadocio of hip-hop.

VICTOR VICTOR BAND
http://victorvictorband.com/
Then there's Victor Victor Band, fellow garage goons from Philly whose
mighty crunch and weasel-y vocals recall a more sinister White
Stripes, and not just because they're a guy-girl guitar-drums duo.
(Doug Wallen, PW)

SURGEON
http://www.surgeonband.net
http://www.myspace.com/surgeonband
Set to tape earlier this year under the guidance of cantankerous indie
god Steve Albini, Surgeon's Angry Guest EP is a cleaner, meaner affair
than the Philly quartet's past work, including that under their
previous name Bumrunner. The shadowy band still thrives on the tension
between singer/bassist Sean Boltron's chirping, androgynous vocals and
guitarist/songwriter Lydia Giordano's twisty, surreal leads. Surgeon's
not afraid to dig for inspiration in mainstream classic and modern
rock, and yet the players darken the corners considerably and sneak in
prog-metal undertones. The EP's seven songs are as tight and crunchy
as we've come to expect, their increasingly eerie vibe culminating in
the standout closer "Walking Fire."

CASUAL VIKING
http://www.myspace.com/casualviking
Casual Viking have played raw, sinister rock & roll with an ample
sense of humor since they formed as a three-piece in late 2004. Forced
into hiatus for much of '07 by the loss of a rehearsal space, the band
returned this year with all-new material, a fourth member, and alineup
shift that put its drummer behind a keyboard and made a drummer of its
bassist. An audience member at their first show recently was overheard
referring to their sound as "spy-rock", a description they would not
bother to argue with. However, Casual Viking remain split on their
opinion about the taste of coconut.

THE SYKES
http://www.myspace.com/thesykesphilly
Imagine Keith Richards falling up the stairs after another blood
transfusion... ..then Boy George walks over and helps him to his feet,
and the three dead Ramones suddenly jump out of the nearest dark
corner and beat the fuck out of everyone in the room.

THE JELLYHEARTS (Columbus, OH. Last seen opening for The Tough Shits)
http://www.myspace.com/prospectors
Prospectors are best known for hollerin', "There's gold in them thar
hills!" So are we, but we're the jellyhearts and we have hearts of
gold, "very fragile dispositions," and capguns. We're a couple
whiskey-drunk roadtrippers who stomp out the nogood lowdown dirty
punked out blues like dudes. Our songs are delivered to you by a
wanky-ass guitarist, reba con queso, and her bambam metronome, mizz
lorn. Spawned from rustbelt blues and cap city sludge, the jellyhearts
slithered down to the ohio river valley, where we exchanged the hearts
and stars with flowers for tom collinses and mustachios. These days,
we are chased by bats and exiled, speeding down the southbound
freeways with a tiny acoustic global and a tambourine, singing to the
wind and pouring fire in the belly. Our tunes harness the bo diddley
stomp, the defiant energy of the mc5, and the raw gories sound to
create a newfangled brand of reckless garage rock. As notorious noise
ordinance violators, we pack every jam with shredding, swagger, gain,
and enough floortom pounding to drive the blues away. Music is spirit
and soul, and ours comes from the very bottom of our jellied hearts.
Every song is prayer to sonny boy williamson, cap'n beefheart, art
tatum, the stones, and the stooges, and also to all the kids who love
to get sweaty and ain't afraid to dance!

MUSIC FOR HEADPHONES
http://www.musicforheadphones.info/
http://www.phillygirlabouttown.com/girl_about_town/2008/01/spill-music-for.html
We can't get enough of our new Band of the Month! Filter is proud to
announce the discovery of Music for Headphones. The droning
psychedelic soundscapes reminiscent of Brian Jonestown Massacre, The
Dandy Warhols, The Secret Machines and The Velvet Underground. The
electronic-based sound and distorted guitar juxtaposed against grating
vocals makes this a band best enjoyed at maximum volume or, for lack
of a better term, through headphones. (Filter)

ROSEHIPS (Columbus, OH. Mem. of The Jellyhearts)
http://www.myspace.com/rosehipsgirls
http://www.columbusalive.com/?sec=music&story=alive/2008/0117/m-rosehips.html
For more than a year, Rosehips have peddled an intriguing sound that
evokes early-'90s bands ranging from Smashing Pumpkins and Hum to
Sonic Youth and L7. Now, with a new lineup and a full-length record
ready for release in 2008, Cassie Lewis, Danielle Kelly, Jill Harrison
and Lauren Mattei are set to bring their powerful brand of indie-rock
to new audiences in and out of town. Their music is pretty — and it's
potent. "When people hear you're in an all-girl band, people think
we're all cute and can half-play our instruments," said Harrison, the
bassist. Kelly, one of two guitarists, quickly added, "Then they come
to our shows, and their jaws drop. I use the term 'pillow-fight rock,'
because it hits you hard but it's also kind of sweet." Recently, two
songs from the upcoming album were recorded by MTV2's On the Rise, an
on-demand TV program documenting new and promising bands across the
country. (John Ross, Columbus Alive)

ABOUT THE SHOW

One of Europe's most innovative contemporary arts groups, Oslo-based Verdensteatret will bring audiences into a highly experimental audiovisual installation that goes far beyond the boundaries of conventional performance. Last winter, Verdensteatret sailed up the Mekong Delta, the same river that plays the veins and arteries around the heart of darkness in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. Inspired by their journey, louder is a symphonic collage of music and visual art: massive video projections of the Vietnamese countryside play as Soviet-era megaphones hurl sound in all directions. Gaping puppet jaws chase flocks of small metal figures across the room. An enormous mechanical spider looms over the scene. Verdensteatret uses sculptural scenography, mesmerizing generators of sound, and technological relics of a bygone era to create a spectacular universe that unites concert, art, and theate.

Concept, Design, and Direction: Asle Nilsen, Lisbeth J. Bodd, Håkon Lindbäck, Piotr Pajchel, Ali Djabbary, Marius Kjos, Mara Oldenburg, Petter Steen, Christian Blom, Bergmund Waal Skaslien, Elisabeth Gmeiner, Hai Nguyen Dinh, Christina Peios, Rune Madsen, Trond Lossius Pajchel.

The production of louder was made possible in part by support from Arts Council Norway and The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

MAD VISION
PRODUCTIONS
Presents

“GODS Vs. MEN: THE BOOK OF XEN”

In this staging of songwriter Djo Fortunado's (aka Joe Fortunato's) 3 Act song cycle, Gods vs. Men, we encounter Xen Te, a young office worker who awakens one day to discover his head has become detached from his body. In his attempts to live a normal life, Xen will encounter a fast changing world of absurd proportions, which will awaken him to new possibilities for a life outside the box of his previous ideals.

Gods Vs. Men will stage at the Rotunda, at 4014 Walnut Street, in the heart of West Philadelphia/University City on August 30th – 7pm, and 31st – at 2pm. *(An additional show may be added at 7pm Sun, the 31st, based on interest). Admission will be on a sliding scale of $5 to 7. In collaboration with a talented cast and production crew, Djo's characters will jump off the pages of illustrated playbills or “Hymnals”, written an illustrated by Djo, to be handed out & available for purchase at each performance. A small cast of talented actors & actresses will act out scenes from Xen's coming of age journey, as Djo and several other musicians perform songs, interwoven with the narrative to move the greater story along. Film makers Even Nie and Julia Hoff are also making a documentary about the creation of the play, and will be filming each of the staged performances to be submitted to further film & theatre festivals.

The play itself takes place in New Crescent City, destroyed and rebuilt in the years after the Greatest War, sometime in the late 21st century. We'll meet Radio One, God of Demographic Data & Marketing, whose power is wavering as he seeks a new messiah to give him new life, in the image of a young, lively God. Fawn over Gaia Jasmin, an art dealer's assistant who accidentally weaves a fabric that camouflages its wearers against targeted advertising. Thumb your nose at Gaia's boss, Mr. Maker, conceptual Anti-Artist and real estate icon, as he displays his conceptual works of "Non-Things: or Nothings Becoming Somethings.” Witness the Ultra Mega Bowl, a traveling urban demolition exercise, pitting Genetically Altered Ex-soldiers from the Greatest War against their generals – whose pay-per-view revenues will be used to rebuild the cityscapes they inevitably destroy in their 'skirmishes'.

Draped like ornaments on the core of Xen & Gaia's budding love story, Djo's characters will astound, amaze, and surely entertain. Just don't forget to grab your Hymnals, so you can read along to Djo's songs, as they weave together this utterly enjoyable & absurdly romantic Satirical tapestry!

FEATURING WORKS FROM NATIONALLY RENOWNED AND EMERGING PHILADELPHIA ARTISTS, LOCAL EXHIBIT SHINES A LIGHT ON THE BEAUTY OF EVERYDAY TRASH-TURNED-TREASURE

In today's highly eco-conscious society, green is the new black. From plastic and paper to glass and aluminum, just about everything we touch on a daily basis is recyclable.

While single-stream recycling and sustainability are relatively new concepts in the timeline of human history, they're age-old practices in the art world. Artists have always used what's at hand for inspiration, but many use common detritus as their physical medium.

'A Beautiful Find,' a found objects exhibition at James Oliver Gallery (JOG), opening September 6th and running through October 6th, showcases various interpretations and uses of materials salvaged from nature's junk heap and humankind's dustbin of abandonment. A reception with the artists will be Saturday, September 6th from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

From scrap shop pieces and discarded sample-spoons, to naturally mummified rats and mouse bones extricated from regurgitated owl pellets, the building blocks of the featured works truly spotlight the artists' creativity while challenging the viewers' perceptions.

'A Beautiful Find,' curated by Philadelphia artist Veronica Scarpellino, compiles the works of Tom Judd, Phillip Johnson, George-ann F. Greth, Ron Johnson, Andrew Brehm, Brookes Britcher, Steven Earl Weber, Fatima Adamu, Billy and Steven Dufala, Justin Coffin and others.

For more information on the artists, see artist bios below ...

'A Beautiful Find' Artist Bios

Tom Judd is a nationally recognized artist who shows in a dozen galleries across the country and Canada. His work is created using wallpaper and fabric samples, found images from old magazines and photo albums, and uses imagery reminiscent of memories and metaphors. He is a recipient of the Pollack/Krasner Grant, and has his work in collections in Hong Kong and France, as well as in the collections of The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama.

Phillip Johnson – owner of a high-end construction company – creates three-dimensional gesture drawings, thumbnail sketches made from the detritus of construction. They are the beginnings of thoughts and thus retain a spirit of invention and inquiry. Johnson has shown his work in New York and in Philadelphia, and was included in an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.

Steven Earl Weber, a partner/owner of the local art gallery Kelly & Weber Fine Art - uses multiple objects, images, and their arrangement to address questions of subjective identity, politics, religion, and the inner reasoning that motivates conclusions in these matters, combining found objects and materials with casting techniques in plaster and ceramic.

Billy Dufala & Steven Dufala (A.K.A. the Dufala Brothers) create work that reflects their own individual sensibilities in an ongoing dialog that results in them learning about themselves and their audiences. Steven is the founding member of the breakout band Man Man, in which Billy is currently a member. Man Man has blasted onto the national scene with much critical acclaim.

Brookes Britcher received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and his BS from Drexel University. He is a multi-disciplinary artist that maintains a permanent studio practice at Adaptation. Over the last eight years his work has been exhibited around the country in numerous curated and group shows, and exists in various private collections, most notably J.W. Mahoney of Art In America and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. and Tim Rollins of Tim Rollins & K.O.S.

George-ann F. Greth, known locally as a master glassblower, utilizes her sense of humor in her work. She is a staple artist at JOG, having shown her work in numerous exhibits as well as curating a successful glass show at JOG.

Ron Johnson, another JOG artist, is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Primarily a painter, Johnson is creating delicate works of found spider webs. His art is found in several private and corporate collections, including those of actor Nicolas Cage, Sony and Warner Bros.

Andrew Brehm graduated from Kutztown University. He has focused on furniture making while also perusing fine arts sculpture. Among other work, Brehm will exhibit a video segment showing a quirky scene where the artist himself unpacks found suitcases, which unfold into usable furniture.

Fatima Adamu is an artist, dancer and urban planner. She was born in the United States and was raised in Nigeria. Her art draws inspiration from the colors and textures found in flora, and in the delicacy of detailed anatomical illustrations of parts of the human body.

Justin Coffin is a playwright and a photographer whose main subject is the discarded Arctic Splash container. Strewn about Fishtown (a neighborhood in Philadelphia) in an almost epidemic manner, Coffin finds the discarded cartons to be full of pathos. Untouched by the artist, the litter is captured on film in both color and black and white.

Veronica Scarpellino is an artist and the curator of this exhibit. Her work has been exhibited in New York City, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, in Atlanta at the Eyedrum nonprofit art space, and in Philadelphia through Projekt30. She recently received an award from the Andy Warhol Foundation through her work with Eyedrum.

asNEXUS

Join Perpetual Movement and Sound and J. Makary for asNEXUS in the 2008 Philly Fringe, a shared evening of performance installations that heighten the experience of the body through technology. Seeking form in minutiae, Perpetual Movement and Sound amplify the movements of dancers using live-feed audio and video, while J. Makary's video-based performance enters a fantasy where youth subculture never dies but instead matures.

Friday, September 5 through Monday, September 8
8:30 p.m.
$10

NEXUS/foundation for today's art
Crane Arts Building, 1400 N American St. #102, Philadelphia

For tickets, visit http://www.phillyfringe.org/2008/details.cfm?id=5349 or call the Philly Fringe box office at (215) 413-1318.

Perpetual Movement and Sound will premiere assembling minutiae, an installation in which solo dancer Emily Sweeney inhabits a landscape designed by Bilwa, with video by Blaine Siegel and an electronic sound score by Michael McDermott. Surrounded by projections of duets with dancers Brigitta Herrmann, Rebecca Patek, and Jil Stifel, as well as video and audio recordings of her moving body taken live, Sweeney meticulously disassembles and reassembles movement phrases, exploring how our senses evoke a person's presence or mitigate their absence; how memories are not static entities, but are recreated each time we call them to mind. For more information and biographical information about the artists, please visit www.perpetualmvmtsnd.org.

J. Makary creates movement and video works that unite social dance, contemporary movement study, and the language of film. This shared evening will be the premiere of Wanna Kiss Myself, a character-based dance film created in collaboration with Philadelphia dancers, and an interconnected live performance featuring New York-based dance artist Pedro Jimenez and Ms. Makary. Set at a casual party among friends, the new video work blurs the line between what's scripted and what's organic, as a naturalistic setting is revealed to be a backdrop for a peculiar revival of popular dance. Please visit www.jmakary.com to view the artist's past work.
