http://paperbag.firstpersonarts.org
You packed the house for Davy Rothbart's performance at the 2008 First Person Festival, and this spring, to celebrate the release of FOUND's brand-new book, Requiem for a Paper Bag, intrepid FOUND road warriors Davy and Peter Rothbart are climbing back in the tour van for a 50-city cross-country odyssey. On May 5th, they'll steer that van into Philadelphia for the official launch date of the new book!
At the show, Davy (FOUND's plucky point guard) will share the latest magnificent and mesmerizing finds that've landed in the mailbox at FOUND HQ, plus hilarious found tales from contributors to the new book including Seth Rogen, Chuck D, Sarah Vowell, Devendra Banhart, and Weeds creator Jenji Kohan. Meanwhile, Davy's brother Peter (FOUND's international heartthrob) will dazzle with a glittering constellation of new breathtaking songs based on FOUND notes.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Requiem for a Paper Bag: Celebrities and Civilians Tell Stories of the Best Lost, Tossed, and Found Items from Around the World
By Davy Rothbart
Over the years we've been able to share thousands of our favorite finds; now, we get to share some of our favorite stories about finding! When we asked our favorite writers, musicians, artists, and entertainers to share stories with us of their most memorable finds, we had no idea we'd be flooded with so many strange, profound, and hilarious tales. The new FOUND book, Requiem for a Paper Bag, contains 67 short pieces from an amazing clutch of contributors, including Chuck D, Sarah Vowell, Andy Samberg, Susan Orlean, Patton Oswalt, PostSecret's Frank Warren, Tom Robbins, Dave Eggers, Miranda July, Jonathan Lethem, Chuck Klosterman, David Simon (The Wire), Jenji Kohan (Weeds), Katherine Dunn, Jim Carroll, Jesse Thorn (The Sound of Young America), Andrew Bird, Kori Gardner (Mates of State), Mike Schank (American Movie), Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Steve Almond, Paulo Coelho, Billy Bragg, Kimya Dawson, Damian Kulash (OK Go), Devendra Banhart, and dozens of other fantastic folks.

Must say that this may have happened in my finest hr. of thrifting. I love Bar Mitvah souveniers. Found in Northeast Thrift Store by Rich Wexler
FOUND VIDEOS
CAMP
Found outside of student housing during Penn Christmas, The Camp is Camp Saginaw in the Poconos. On a side note; I actually went to college with Hugh "Space" Asden and he was in my Fraternity. On another note, I had screened this at a bar one night and the guy who actually shot the video wound up being there randomly.
DRAMA QUEEN
Found at thrift store on Lancaster Avenue. There were two tapes and about 12 hrs of footage of these two sisters. This was the best part. When I looked up Christine Goodman, I found that she was studying to be a cantor.
ROCKING FOR JESUS
Found at Thrift Store in Northeast Philadelphia. It was some type of religious program that used "Rock Music" to teach kids about Jesus. Watch the two kids who go from playing the drums and guitar to singing a hymm.

"I FOUND LOVE"
An art show of found, and inspired by found images of the things we love.
Featuring
ANDREW RICHARDSON - Sculpture using found objects
Andrew Richardson spent almost a decade in the wilderness. Now he returns, with evidence of what love for robots, Christmas, and women in general will get you.
MARY REESE - Uses found imagery in her paintings
Mary Reese began painting eight years ago while living in Indianapolis and attending Indiana University. She is a recent Philadelphia transplant. Her current oil paintings are portraits, focusing on both animals and people found on the internet, as well as bright colors and texture. Reese enjoys the humor and unnaturalness found in portraiture. She is extremely interested in the relationship between pets and their owners, and how central animals are in the lives of Americans. She also finds it fascinating that personal information and photographs can be obtained on the internet and utilized by anyone. When not painting, Reese works with students at South Philadelphia High School and teaches adult English classes. She is currently attempting to master the ukulele.
AMANDA MILLER - Illustrations using found images and found objects.
At first glance when viewing my work one might see elegant, pretty animals delicately playing across a stark background. Fluffy. Nice. Only upon further examination might the viewer begin to gather information that would alter these initial impressions. Yes, the overall appearance might be fluffy but, there seems to be something else. Why do the animals stare so strangely, almost vaguely sinister? If they were alive what might they do next? My effort frequently is to pinpoint the precise moment when a look of welcome becomes a look of fear. Traditions in storytelling often illustrate common concerns within the human psyche. In particular stories of folklore and myth rely heavily on themes from nature. The relationships between humans and nature can be odd and intuitive. Everyone perceives things differently. It is a natural instinct to fear what cannot be identified. A branch scratching a cliff face could easily become fingernails clawing towards you when enveloped in darkness. Why must we not embrace these things that go bump in the night? After all, there is an element of glamour to potential villainy.
ALEX SPENCER - Found video
has collected videos for many years. He will be highlighting some of his favorite finds.
RICH WEXLER - Found video and photos, and digitally manipulated found photos
Has collected "Found" photographs and videos for about ten years. He has been lucky enough to have found, or has been given by friends, approximately 1500 photos, 500 slides, 15 super 8 reels, and 7 yearbooks. Many of these are found in larger collections of a few hundred photographs. In addition to showing various parts of his collection, he has started a blog called "Found in Philadelphia" as a way to try to collect various other people's found pics to create some kind of strange, unknown, narrative of the city. He will also be showing found pics and videos that have been manipulated and made into something new. Part of this project is as on-line blog, and Facebook Page where people can post found photos, videos, or notes (make into jpeg form and enter as a photo). Add any additional info about the posted item that you wish in caption section)

FOUND PICS, NOTES, AND VIDEO FROM PHILLY
I am starting this blog as part of an art project and show that will take place on February 13th at the Midwives Gallery. Stay tuned for more information. I have avoided posting these videos and photos in any formal manner for a long time. I felt since "Found" magazine kind of has the market cornered. Don't get me wrong, I am huge fan of the magazine. I just felt like I was kind of stealing from them, or that I should just send these to them. But I guess what makes these different is I found them in the city I am from and I wanted to share that with people who know the city. I am in the midst of preparing for a Found Art show and wanted to start a blog while I was organizing it. These photos and videos represent some of the best ones I 've found. I guess I wanted to use the opportunity to start something bigger. Please feel free to send me any pics or videos, you have found in Philadelphia, along with a description of where you found it, and if it had any importance to you. Please send to shermanarts@gmail.com (or mail to Rich Wexler, 4725 Baltimore Ave. Apt. 1R, Phila Pa. 19143) along with your name if you wish. You can also just send a link to youtube vids or a jpeg to my email. I am also in the process of making a zine of the photos, and DVD of some of the Found Video. So enjoy. I'd like to turn this into something bigger if that's where it goes.
MIDWIVES COLLECTIVE
Who We Are
The Midwives Collective was founded in 2005 by a group of women artists who studied together at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia. The Collective was born from the want to promote its members' unique visions, expose their work to broader audiences, and develop our members careers as professional artists.
The Collective became known as the Midwives Collective & Gallery in August 2006, when the group acquired a studio space on historic Jeweler's Row in Center City Philadelphia. From August 2006 through August 2007, we Midwives used the space on Jeweler's Row as a co-operative studio and gallery, as well as a place to host weekly life drawing sessions.
In this inaugural year, our focus was on displaying the work of our members in solo and group exhibitions as well as curating exciting idea-based exhibitions featuring the work of emerging artists of Philadelphia and beyond in our intimate non-traditional gallery space. After August 2007, we left our space on Jeweler's Row. We are very pleased to announce that in May 2008 we move into our new gallery at Factory 1241, 1241 Carpenter Street, Philadelphia. Monthly exhibitions will begin in September 2008. To find out what's happening in the gallery, check out our blog: midwivescollective.blogspot.com or email: themwc@gmail.com to be added to our mailing list and get show announcements by email. Currently our members are:
-Sarah L. Hunt
-Christiana Kugel
-Elizabeth Smith
-Nora Hiriart
-Carol Deutsch

The Midwives Collective & Gallery is a women's collective formed for the purpose of fostering community art making, culture, and the creation of art history by maintaining a public arena for the display and practice of innovative emerging art. In addition to sometimes showing our own works, we orchestrate open-call shows to provide support and exposure for emerging artists and encourage innovation, risk, and exploration in the arts. The audience at large is invited to share an artistic experience in an intimate, non-traditional gallery space.
