THE NOTEKILLERS/ BUNNYDRUMS/ CHROMELODEON/ THE BURRS
Free All Ages Show!
NOTEKILLERS (Ecstatic Peace Label)
common.jpg
Thurston Moore once called the Notekillers a "weird lost myth for some of us". Originally existing in fairly complete obscurity from 1977-81 in Philadelphia, the Notekillers were profoundly reminded how little one can really understand about the whims of fate when twenty-some years after they broke up in utter frustration, Thurston hailed their single "The Zipper" as "mind-blowing" and named them as a significant influence on Sonic Youth in a recent issue of Mojo Magazine. Soon after that they were putting out a compilation CD of archival material from back in the day on his Ecstatic Peace label and soon after THAT the Notekillers decided to find out if the world would like them any more now than back then.
And the answer coming back is a resounding "YES!"—they've gotten just an incredible amount of glowing press for the CD and have been getting fantastic responses every time they venture out there to play a combination of new jams and old favorites. People seem genuinely stunned by the sound and the spectacle.
for this, we can thank the NK's crack R&D department which diligently explored and synthesized the properties and practices of destabilized rock music, screaming free jazz, pre-school funk, 20th-century sub-atomic composers, hyper-reductivist thinkin', thousand year old shamanic hand-me-downs, 5th dimension visitation rites, kaleidoscopes, watchmaking, athletics and pebbles tossed in a glassy pond.

CHROMELODEON
3.jpg
Philadelphia octet Chromelodeon manipulates its sound as if fiddling with an old-school joystick. It's a music fraught with twitching and twirling, blipping and barking, theremin-fueled juking and blissing out within glacial cinematic space-capades. There is also, of course, a touch of kitsch in a chaos-driven orchestra named after instrument inventor Harry Partch's quirky reed organ (hence the Sprite Slowdown offshoot, which dedicates itself to video game soundtracks). Either way Chromelodeon is a group that utilizes violins and accordions with the same ardor as guitars. But this band -- best heard live, great on Bloodlink label CDs In the Year 20XX and the new Heart of Sawdust -- is cluttered, clustered and hard, with little comparison to much else within avant-garde circles. One of its hairiest synth players (under the guise of anonymity and group expression) sat us down to tell us that the Chromelodeon sound is as hopped-up as he is on Sparks.

BUNNYDRUMS
Go4BDrem.jpg
The list of bands Bunnydrums played with during its brief history - including Pere Ubu, REM, Bauhaus, Colin Newman, Tuxedomoon, Gang of Four, The Cult, Alan Vega, Pylon - reads like a who's who of modern rock. But the Bunnydrums sound differed from all of them, still existing in its own unique space.
The sounds collected here come from the 1984 Holy Moly European tour, and present the original Bunnydrums lineup at their most intense and obtuse - sounds so strange, entrancing, and powerful that they made me want to join the band in their creation of this glorious noise

BIRDIE BUSCH (Folk)
dsc_3054.jpg
The music of Birdie Busch is natural. There isn’t pretense, nothing forced or processed, just delicate melodies and deceptively simple lyrics that resonate upon further discovery.
Born amidst a great wealth of talent residing in Philadelphia these days, Birdie just finished her first studio recording in the spring of 2005 entitled The Ways We Try and the recording has all the warmth, atmosphere, and feeling of the best of the classic records in your collection. The album, recorded in a converted auto garage in the marshlands of South Jersey, was created somewhat the opposite of how songs are usually recorded, with two guitars leading the rhythm, bass and drums chasing off-kilter meters, and piano and organ coloring the lyrics and adding width and depth to the melodies.

I House Film presents
LUNACY BY JAN SVANKMAJER
lunacy4[1].jpg
Saturday, December 9 at 6pm and 8:30pm
dir. Jan Svankmajer, Czech Republic /Slovkia, 2006, 35mm, 118 mins, Czech
w/ English subtitles
Jan Svankmajer, master animator and dyed-in-the-wool surrealist, has influenced Tim Burton, the Quay Brothers and anyone who has ever harbored the fear that objects may be conspiring against them. Lunacy builds on his previous features (Alice, Faust, Conspirators Of Pleasure, Little Otik), melding the creepiness of Edgar Allen Poe’s stories (Premature Burial, The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether) with the sex and violence decadence of the Marquis de Sade.
A “philosophical horror film” (according to Svankmajer), Lunacy asks who’s free, who’s mad and why does all that raw meat seem to have a life of its own? Not for the feint of heart.
Free admission members (except Internationalist level); $5 Internationalist members, students + seniors, $7 general admission.
Advance tickets at or 866.468.7619.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS BY JJ
20060902c_festival_0108.jpg
Hope you had a great thanksgiving -
I'm emailing to remind folks that might be interested that my winter workshops in photography, photoshop, and website creation are starting up.
This is the last bit of spam that I'll be sending out about workshops. in the future notifications will be sent to a specific opt-in mailing list - if you're interested in hearing about them, make sure that you sign up for that list at:
http://www.jjtiziou.net/workshops
Currently confirmed workshops are:
Photoshop Intro - Sun Dec 3, 10am-6pm
Website basics - Mon Dec 4, 6pm-10pm
Website basics - Tues Dec 5, 6pm-10pm
Digital Photography basics - Wed Dec 6, 6pm-10pm
Remember, these workshops are all sliding-scale- so if you know anyone who's broke but still interested, no one will be turned away from lack of funds. the goal is to try and disseminate some of this tech knowledge into the wider community,
In addition to what's listed on the website, there may be some sessions added Dec 11-Dec 15 by request, if enough people are interested. The next round of workshops will probably be in february.
best,
-jj

BOWERBIRD SHOWS
BOWERBIRD PRESENTS two strange and wonderful events this weekend:
fri, dec. 8 @ the ROTUNDA- NATHANIEL BARTLETT, ILLUSORY CORRELATIONS,
BLACKSBERG, HERNANDEZ and SEABROOK, LITTLE OCEAN
citypaper preview: Nathaniel Bartlett- Bryn Mawr-based marimba player
and composer Nathaniel Bartlett is singularly dedicated to his
instrument. He plays almost exclusively solo recitals, processing his
music through an array of electronics to create sparse, modernist works
that build from the marimba's percussive resonance. For this
Bowerbird-presented show, he'll present three new pieces by different
composers. -Shaun Brady .... details below ....
sat, dec 9 @ PHOTO WEST - MATTHEWS, RADDING, DRURY, ROTTY WHAT, MOTHER
citypaper preview: Rotty What -Jack Wright and John Bennett are an apt
team, both having sustained lengthy (anti-)careers in the face of
popular incomprehension of what they create - or ignorance of their
very existence. Calling the former an improvising musician and the
latter a poet would only be correct in the most reductionist way,
considering how easily either one could fit the description of the
other. Rotty What is a trio completed by Bennett's son on drums, though
if he's learned anything from his dad, that won't quite cover it.
-Shaun Brady .... details below ....

*THE EIGHT: Reindeer Monologues -- OPENING TOMORROW NIGHT!
In Jeff Goode's THE EIGHT: Reindeer Monologues, each of the "elite eight" gives their side of the story after a media frenzy erupts over Vixen's scandalous allegations against the big man himself -- jolly ol' "Saint" Nick.
Starting tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 8th), join BCKSEET Productions at the Society Hill Playhouse's Red Room, located at 507 S. 8th Street, for performances of this anti-holiday hit. THE EIGHT starts at 7:30 pm and seating is general. However, come early when the doors open at 7 pm for our Holiday Happy (half-)Hour featuring a different musical guest each night!
The full musical bill includes:
Paul Edelman of The Jangling Sparrows (Dec. 8)
Katie B. (Dec. 9)
Jon Von Glaubitz (Dec. 10)
Janice Rowland (Dec. 11)
Naeemah (Dec. 14)
Avie Tim (Dec. 15)
Anam Owili-Eger (Dec. 16)
If you can't make it to tomorrow evening's performance, THE EIGHT will be running this Friday through Monday (Dec. 8 - 11) and next Thursday through Saturday (Dec. 14 - 16). Tickets are $18 and include one drink from our bar. They can be purchased at the Society Hill Playhouse's box office or by calling 215-923-0210. TAMMY GAYE VS. AMANDA PLAYWITHE
MRS. MILLER CROONS XX-XMAS TUME
BARBRA STREISAND SHOCKS AUDIENCE
World renowned fallen TV evangelist wife
and all around born-again sobber, Tammy Gaye Faker,
has put together a Telethon to raise money
for Limbless Children Without Myspace. Just
in time for the Holidays, she's also premiereing
her new PERFUME. Godsmell-smell the love of Christ!
But, for shame! Why is a preggers Amanda Playwithe
on the soundstage? And what is Mrs. Miller singing
about at Christmas time?
All will be answered when Barbra Streisand herself
makes a shocking guest appearance in-
"TAMMY GAYE FAKER'S GODSMELL"!
The Dumpsta Players are a monthly themed interactive improvisational theatre experience that parodies society's joys and ills in an irreverent and over-the-top style. Dumpsta was chosen as a name because the company recycles costumes, actors, characters, and comic bits month after month. Dumpsta also brings to mind the trashy nature of our performing -- drag queens, genderfuck, and all walks of life come together and express joy, rage and general chaos through live mic and
lipsynched sketches once a month!

Howdy folks,
The minutes from our last meeting are now available.
Secondly, the next meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday (the 13th). Is that still cool for people?

PHILLY FICTION BOOK on Sale Now!!! I am writing about a very important issue. As the holiday season is upon us, I must tell you there is no better gift than Philly Fiction in 2006. This book of 19 stories set in Philadelphia and by Philadelphia-area writers makes a great no-brainer gift for anyone who lives in or is from Philadelphia. It will also enlighten those who have yet to make their first visit. The Philadelphia Inquirer agrees: “It's all about conflict, and characters. This town has lots of them, in addition to some fine short-story writers. I liked every one of the tales in this anthology, and a handful I just loved. . . . Philly Fiction rocks: Buy your own copy and see.” And so does the weekly Play: “If you feel that indescribable sense of Philly pride, then this book is a must read. If others, maybe living outside the city, don’t understand your feelings, than this book is a must-gift.” Philadelphia Magazine says, “The writing sings!” and Philadelphia City Paper called the book, “Delish!” Philly Fiction is sold on www.amazon.com (click here), www.bn.com and the Philadelphia-area bookstores below. It can also be ordered by just about any bookstore across the country. Voices & Visions – The Bourse (lower level) on 4th Street between Chestnut & Market Headhouse Books – 619 S. 2nd Street (bet. A MOSTE TRAGICK HISTORIE OF ANTOINETTE & THE MILKIE CITY

From a white and tiled palace suspended among milky clouds slid Antoinette, a woman-child of mysterious origins, feet first into the murky swamp of reality.
On this dull earth, she found herself being waltzed senseless by perverse clowns, and wandering lost through the poisonous forest…

This original play was written by Cecilia Corrigan (of Haunted Cream Egg), and independently produced with the help of many local Philly performers, artists, and musicians. Featuring music by Tweeter and the Dr. and Philip, this ornate and deviant fairy tale promises to thrill both young and old.

*IMC-ALTERNATIVES JOIN
SUMMARY:
The "imc-alternatives" working group invites you to join us in the
formation of a global "Alternatives IMC!" The "Alternatives IMC" will
be a "next generation" Indymedia website that will both gather content about
all the great things people are doing to create a better world [pioneering
alternative social structures, economics, education, energy, etc.] and
to provide a place for people organizing these projects working on these
projects to connect with each other to do practical, world-changing
work. We invite you to check out information at
'"https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/IndymediaAlternatives".

You are INVITED to participate in the Alternatives Indymedia!!
Activists striving for fundamental change have achieved marked success
in recent years, combining massive street demonstrations against War,
poverty and unaccountable global institutions with long-term community
organizing and innovative internet tools to create public discussion around the
many problems facing our world. Independent media sources like Indymedia,
and to some extent the mainstream media, have covered this rising tide of
discontent, providing substantial analysis of most everything that's
"wrong" with the current governmental, social and economic systems.

At the same time, though with much less fanfare, many people and
organizations are working to develop systems that are "right." These
are focused on working solutions, such as participatory decision-making
processes, equitable economies, technologies of cooperation, and many
more.
They nurture social structures and a more ecologically sustainable way
of life. If encouraged , valued and supported, these tangible and concrete
experiments could represent a positive shift toward "a new way of
being"; the next bold step in the movement to create a better world. But the
word needs to get out about them. Right now we have an imbalance in coverage
of the problems and the critique and not enough dissemination of
empowering information about what is working in the world and how people can get
involved with these kinds of "experiments".
The Alternatives Indymedia (a working title) is a project with multiple
goals:
1) To open a vibrant, inspiring, and multilingual Indymedia site
through which users will both share information about current efforts toward
fundamental change and work collaboratively on projects to make change
happen in their communities.

2) To develop the Alternatives Indymedia site to be a "next-generation"
IMC site. This will include offering both traditional IMC features (open
publishing newswire, central feature column) as well as collaborative
editing (aka open editing) and wiki work-pages, integrated forums and
project-oriented mailing lists, blogs, RSS feeds, and other advances
that will inspire active participation in the site. To accomplish this, we
want to work with visionary techies and innovative coders (maybe YOU??) to
pioneer new versions of code (perhaps using Drupal, perhaps using
Plone),
that will help transform Indymedia sites from relics of a bygone era
when open publishing itself was considered revolutionary -- way back in
2000! --into elegant, powerful, INSPIRING sites that empower a new generation
of activists to work together to make change.

We intend this site to become an indispensable resource for those
interested in the basic fundamentals of fundamental change - the
who/what/where/when/why of what people are doing to better the world --
as well as a living laboratory for those who want to make change happen
NOW.

The Alternatives IMC Working Group invites you to join us in realizing
this vision. We are looking for (1) techies who are interested in developing
the next generation of IMC sites, (2) organizers who share our desire to
harness the power of Indymedia to advance social change, and (3) media
makers who love covering the alternatives, experiments and solutions
that are happening across the globe!
Please join our working
email
list at
imc-alternatives at indymedia.org (join through
"http://lists.indymedia.org"). You may also contact Jay fundamentalchange.net> and/or Sheri for more
information. We look forward to working together to create a shift in
thinking, perception and individual and collective political will.

LAVA SPACE NEEDS DONATIONS
Dear Supporter of Community Media and Organizing in Philadelphia,
Hello from your friends at the Lancaster Avenue Autonomous Zone -- also
known as LAVA! It has been an exciting summer for the LAVA zone -- new
tenants like ACT UP Philadelphia have settled in, the Media Mobilizing
Project of the Independent Media Center of Philadelphia have led
workshops, music events have filled the space with positive energy, the
GeoClan community is moving in, and the Taxi Workers Alliance, a group
representing Philadelphia's taxi drivers, has secured room at the LAVA
space. The Food Not Bombs kitchen is being renovated and fitted out
with ovens, stoves, water, and refrigeration -- supporting the groups
food serving and donation programs across Philadelphia. The walls are
bustling and we are looking forward to amazing things! Can you support
LAVA with a small, regular donation that keeps us thriving day to day,
month to month, year to year? If you already are making a donation,
maybe you could kick it up an extra $5/month?

You can learn more about LAVA here: http://lavazone.org/

And sign up to donate $5/month at this link:
http://tinyurl.com/rsceq
Sign up to donate $10/month at this link:
http://tinyurl.com/n3hwx
Sign up to donate $15/month at this link: http://tinyurl.com/mlvhg
Sign up to donate $20/month at this link: http://tinyurl.com/qsz6t
Sign up to donate $25/month at this link: http://tinyurl.com/nynq2

We know that now is the best time yet to make a regular commitment to
supporting LAVA and its growth. Even though we have costshares from
the tenant organizations, we are still paying back loans from longtime LAVA
supporters who helped to fund our full (and beautiful) renovation.
And, like enterprising West Philadelphia squirrels, we know the winter will
come sooner than anyone expects, and we need to save up for the coming
heating bills, to keep our pipes and our people from freezing.

Last year we started up a great new program at LAVA -- a monthly
donation system that lets you regularly support LAVA's bills and nest
egg with $5, $15, or $25 withdrawn from your account every month. You
get the benefit of knowing that the cost of a tofu hoagie and juice, or
a night on the town with your sweetie, is going to a community center
that's growing by leaps and bounds. And all without pesky reminders!

If we can come together to support LAVA regularly, then we can make
sure that the basic needs of the space are met. From there, there is no
telling how far we can go, how strong we can grow.

You can stop the donation, or raise your level of support, at any time,
by visiting this website -- and it's easy to tell a friend how to get
in on the ground floor of supporting LAVA. Just forward them this email,
or tell them to visit lavazone.org today!
Thanks for helping us to grow this fall,
LAVA Zone.

PS -- We're so excited about this campaign that we'll be following up
this email with a phonecall! So get ready to hear from us over the
next weeks -- we hope you'll share your dreams for the LAVA zone, let us
know
about new allies and supporters, and kick off a great fall season with
your donation. If you don't want to hear from us by phone, drop us an
email.
PPS -- If you would like to not receive fundraising emails from LAVA,
please write me back to let me know. And if you would like others to
receive this note, forward it widely, or point them at
http://www.lavazone.org today!

SHERMAN PODCAST/ PODCAST SUBMISSION

Updated Nov 23 2006

LOOKING FOR PODCAST SUBMISSIONS
General Posting..Looking for submissions for Podcast Project

(Feel free to re-post)

PODCAST FOR NEW SITE LAUNCH..LOOKING FOR SUBMISSIONS

ABOUT SHERMAN ARTS
For those of you who do not know me, My name is Rich Wexler
I run a small community arts based promotion organization out of Philadelphia called Sherman Arts. I host shows, and post community arts events, with the intention of creating community and supporting local, national and international arts. I also run a website that has many resources, and events listings that can be found at www.shermanarts.org
I have been doing this work for 6 years and put out a local compilation that was named one of the top 10 local cd's of 2006 by A.D Amorosi of The Philadelphia City Paper

SITE RE-LAUNCH
I am putting together a Podcast for the re-release of Sherman Blog Website on Jan 14th.
The Podcast will be promoted for the 14th launch, but not released till March 1st.
The site will be made more interactive and include reviews, articles, short stories, etc. The current site can be found at www.shermanarts.org. I will also be adding an advisory board that will make the Sherman site more collaborative and inclusive. The Advisory Board includes A.D Amorosi (of City Paper), Gina Renzi (of the Rotunda), Jon Solomon (of WPRB and city paper podcast), and a few other folks.

WHYME PODCAST
The Podcast will be presented by WHYME Podcast http://www.whymepodcast.org/
They are a local Philadelphia Podcast that has done Podcasts with Ryan from Man Man, Buried Beds, The A-sides, Ramona Cordova, Bad News Bats, Danbert Nobacon (of Chumbawamba), Spinto Band, Up the Stairs & Through the Hall compilation, Joshua Marcus, Adam Arcuraji, & National Eye

PODCAST CONCEPT
The Podcast will be presented as an improvised somewhat made-up style as if it were a Christopher Guest movie. The bands will not be made fun of, but much of the back story to why the band is on the Podcast will be fictional. All websites/ contacts of band and actual opinions of music will be based on reality, but otherwise most of it will be improvised and made up. I find many of these Podcasts and Interviews to be a bit dry and dull, so I am trying to do something to somewhat parody this, but also not disrespect the music or bands. Again imagine its a Christopher Guest film (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman)

HOW TO SEND A SONG
I am asking for as many songs as you can send. I spend a fair amount of time curating the songs and presenting the songs as body of work. Please denote the songs you wish most to have on the podcast, but all songs should be fair game for consideration. So the more the better. I need higher quality than MP3 since it will be eventually made into an MP3. Aiff files are preferred, or high quality playable cd's. I may not use any songs so sending a cd does not promise a spot. If and after a song is chosen, I will send you an email asking for permission to use it.
I will have approx. 10-12 songs from Philadelphia, NY, and some other National and International bands. It will based on Philadelphia but not exclusively.

SEND A CD/DEADLINES
Please send to
Rich Wexler
c/o Sherman Arts
4725 Baltimore Ave. Studio Apt 1

The deadline for submissions is Jan 1st 2007. Any song that comes after cannot be considered.

Mission of Sherman Arts
Sherman Arts will be starting an on-line magazine to highlight local arts and music (off of it’s website) that will be a resource for local arts and music. It will include music reviews, film reviews, show reviews, articles, prose, and an open events postings page. This will be in addition to the current events page, on-line music store, and film events page. The on-line magazine will be launched on April 1st. There will be an annual on-line downloadable local music compilation, and downloadable local film DVD, put out for the next five years. These may be made into physical products if the finances are available. The Compilation will be released on Sept 24th 2006, and the DVD will be released the following March 2007. There will also be an annual podcast and video podcast to promote each release.

The reasoning behind these endeavors is to bring more of an independent resource for press, musicians, and promoters to garner an audience. It seems that there is an extreme lack of intelligent resources to just hear about good music, or read an intelligent articles. Personally, I feel that most of the Philly music institutions do not support the local artists, nor Independent music. Venues are tied to corporations, and promoters are tied to making money at shows. This structure makes the quality of music suffer as well as support for the local performers.

I wish to incorporate a myspace model of promotion, but for Grassroots and Independent Arts and Music in Philadelphia. (There also may be a physical copy of this magazine if there is appropriate funding) I hope also to keep the magazine as a downloadable PDF.

Advisor role
Your role as an advisor is to send referrals, suggestions for local music, and events. You will also be encouraged to write on-line reviews, articles.etc. You will be credited as an advisor to this project. You will be credited on all products, websites, press etc. Advisors will include Samantha Barrow (local poet), Gina Renzi (Director of the Rotunda), A.D. Amorosi (Writer/ Events Planner), Jon Solomon (WPRB), Doug Wallen (Philadelphia Weekly), Seth Jacquay (WHYME Podcast) Liz George (WPRB), etc. Please email at rich@shermanarts.org or call at 610-246-8968 if you have any concerns, questions or suggestions for other advisors.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING AN ADVISOR PLEASE EMAIL ME at rich@shermanarts.org
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING CD OR SHOW REVIEWS/ ARTCILES/ ETC. I will be starting this April 1st so just send them. I wil post if appropriate
